The AHPRA Expedited Specialist Pathway - What You Need To Know

What is the Expedited Specialist Pathway?

The Expedited Specialist Pathway is a registration route specifically for international specialist medical graduates who hold qualifications from countries with comparable medical training systems. It allows eligible doctors to apply directly to AHPRA — the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency — for specialist registration, without needing to undergo full comparability assessment by an Australian specialist college.

For UK-trained Consultant Dermatologists, this means your GMC registration, CCT, and training history are likely to be recognised as substantially comparable to Australian standards, removing one of the most significant barriers to relocation.

What does the pathway involve?

Once Dermatology is added to the accepted qualifications list, the process is expected to follow the same structure as other specialties currently on the pathway:

Confirm your eligibility — hold a CCT in Dermatology awarded following completion of a GMC-approved specialist training programme
Apply directly to AHPRA for specialist registration — no college comparability assessment required
Complete a period of 3-6 months of supervised practice in an approved Australian specialist position
Complete mandatory orientation to the Australian healthcare system and cultural safety education
Complete the required workplace-based assessments during your supervised period
Receive unconditional specialist registration — and practise as a Consultant Dermatologist in Australia

How long does it take?

Based on the current pathway experience in other specialties, you should allow approximately six to nine months from initial application to commencing independent practice. AHPRA recommends applying at least three to six months before your intended start date.

What does it cost?

Current AHPRA application and registration fees for the Expedited Pathway are substantially lower than the traditional college assessment route — in other specialties, the combined fees are approximately AUD $3,000–$4,000 compared to over AUD $10,000 under the previous process. Specific fees for Dermatology will be confirmed when the specialty is added. Workplace-based assessment fees and any college fees for those pursuing fellowship separately will also apply.

Is this different from the traditional Specialist Pathway?

Yes. The traditional Specialist Pathway required a full assessment by the Australasian College of Dermatologists (ACD) — a process that could take 12 months or more and cost significantly more. The Expedited Pathway bypasses this college assessment entirely and allows a direct application to AHPRA, with the six-month supervised practice period taking the place of an extended assessment process.

Does this lead to Fellowship of the ACD?

The Expedited Pathway leads to specialist registration with AHPRA — not automatic Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. Your Eligibility – A Quick Guide

You are likely to be eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway once Dermatology is added if you:

Hold a CCT in Dermatology awarded following satisfactory completion of a GMC-approved specialist training programme in the United Kingdom
Are currently registered with the GMC (or hold a Certificate of Good Standing if no longer registered)
Meet recency of practice requirements — generally, practising within your specialty for a minimum period within recent years
Meet English language proficiency requirements (typically satisfied by native English speakers or by evidence of practice in an English-speaking environment)
Do not have restrictions, conditions, or adverse findings on your GMC registration

If Dermatology is not yet listed on the Expedited Pathway when you are ready to move, you may still be eligible to apply via the standard ACD Specialist Pathway. We can advise on both options.

The VISA

For most UK Dermatologists, the most common visa routes to provider services in Australia are:

Subclass 482 — Temporary Skill Shortage Visa: Allows you to work in Australia for up to four years (or two years in some cases) with a nominated employer. Aura Medical Group can sponsor this visa for dermatologists joining our network.

Subclass 186 — Employer Nomination Scheme: A permanent residency visa, available directly or after a period on a 482 visa. This is the most common pathway to permanent residency for specialist doctors.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) and State Nomination (Subclass 190): Points-based independent migration routes that may be suitable depending on your circumstances and where in Australia you wish to live.

We connect you with a migration adviser to begin your visa application in parallel with your AHPRA registration. For most applicants, the 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa is the most straightforward initial route.

Relocation

On your first day, you arrive into a clinic that knows you are coming and is ready for you. You will have the opportunity to meet the clinic Practice Manager prior to your first consulting day.

Supervised practice and full registration

During your six-month supervised period, you will be fully clinical — seeing patients, practising as a Consultant, and in control of your billing preferences. At the end of this period, you receive unconditional specialist registration and are free to practise independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my family?

Yes. Your family members can be included in your visa application as dependants. Australia is an excellent destination for families, with strong schooling options, a safe environment, and a welcoming culture.

Will I need to sit any exams?

No. The Expedited Specialist Pathway does not require you to sit Australian college examinations. The six-month supervised practice period replaces the assessment process.

Can I work in both public and private settings?

Yes. Many Consultant Dermatologists in Australia hold both public hospital appointments (VMO or salaried positions) and private practice. Do I need to have a job offer before applying to AHPRA?

You can submit your AHPRA application before receiving a formal contractual offer, but you cannot start practising until AHPRA has approved your supervised practice plan — which requires a confirmed place of practice and supervisor. What if Dermatology is not yet added to the Expedited Pathway when I want to move?
